Sabah Energy Council approves critical power generation projects to restore grid system

KOTA KINABALU (Aug 23): The Sabah Energy Council (MTS) has approved several critical projects for power generation development with a capacity of 700 megawatts towards restoring the state’s grid system.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said among the main projects are the Electrical Hydro Project and Natural Gas Power Plant to ensure reliable and sufficient electricity supply for the state, now and in the future.

He said the MTS meeting also received feedback from the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) concerning the progress of other important power generation projects that have been followed up on since the first MTS meeting in June.

“This includes decisions on the implementation of future energy source projects that have potential and can be used for widespread hydro-electric development in Sabah through the ongoing Sabah Hydro Development Masterplan study by ECoS, as well as the development method for the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant through the Initial Pilot Project concept,” he said after chairing the Second MTS meeting at Menara Kinabalu yesterday.

Hajiji expressed hope that all these efforts would yield the best benefits to realise reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy achievements for the present and future.

He added that this is in line with the Energy Master Plan – Sabah Energy Roadmap and Masterplan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040) for Sabah’s progress and to benefit the people of the state.

MTS was established following the transfer of energy regulatory power from the federal government to Sabah and to replace the Sabah Electricity Supply and Tariff Planning and Implementation Committee.
