Sabah Paddy and Rice Board to start operations next year

KOTA KINABALU (Nov 3): The newly revived Sabah Paddy and Rice Board (LPS) aims to start its operations in six areas here as early as next year.

State Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries (MAFFI) Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan said the board had just held its first meeting, despite only having given a small budget to reactivate.

“But the main budget will come next year, where we will start operating in six areas at first, to modernise our rice production, improve irrigation and use new high-yield seeds.

“In addition, we will also encourage planters to use double cropping to double their production, re-activate close to 7,000 hectares of abandoned areas and have new planting areas.

“We hope to achieve these targets by 2030,” he told reporters after launching the Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen Day Sabah (HPPNS) 2024 at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey, who is also Deputy Chief Minister I, said they are expecting more than 10,000 visitors coming to the three-day HPPNS, which offers 170 booths and exhibitions of various types, as well as learning programmes on modern agriculture and digitalisation adoption.

During the ceremony, he also presented HPPNS awards and high achievers certificates to farmers, breeders and fishermen with the hope that they will continue to be dedicated, committed and competitive in order to attain more successes in the future.

Also present were MAFFI Assistant Minister Datuk Peto Galim, State Rural Development Minister Datuk Jahid Jahim, State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Arifin Mohd Arif and Usno president Tan Sri Pandikar Aman Mulia.
