Sanusi: Gag Order on Titah Adendum Seen as Attempt to Restrict Freedom of Speech

ALOR SETAR – Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, has described the proposed gag order regarding the Titah Adendum issue involving Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as unnecessary and an attempt to curb freedom of speech.

Sanusi pointed out that the Federal Constitution guarantees the right to free speech, and any regulation that contradicts this fundamental right should not be pursued.

“We shouldn’t go as far as issuing a gag order. We should handle this matter with transparency and integrity, without any excessive fears that would hinder discussion,” he said after launching the FAST (Friendly And Smart Technology) mobile app by the Alor Setar City Council (MBAS) on Saturday.

He emphasized that Malaysia is a democratic nation, where freedom of speech should not be restricted. “This is the modern era; let people speak. If there’s a mistake, action can be taken,” he added.

Sanusi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Kedah, further argued that the issue was not one of incitement, as it is already widely known. He believes that educated citizens should be allowed the freedom to form their own opinions based on available information.

In addition, he cautioned the government against repeating past mistakes, such as the introduction of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in 1960, which he noted was misused in the past.

The Titah Adendum issue has sparked controversy, with reports suggesting that the government plans to seek a gag order in the High Court in Kuala Lumpur. However, government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that the government did not direct the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) to take such action.

The case involves sensitive issues concerning the 3Rs (royalty, religion, and race), which has led to critical responses from various parties, including Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, who called the gag order request an inappropriate move.
