Shanghai Electric is offering equipment upgrades to Vietnam’s Ninh Binh Power Plant to increase its efficiency, performance and lifetime

Modernization solutions from Shanghai Electric extended the life of the power plant by another 30 years

NINH BINH, Vietnam , Aug. 18, 2024 / — With the help of Shanghai Electric , Ninh Binh Power Plant , one of the first Vietnamese power plants built in Ninh Binh City, has undergonea comprehensive renovation after 45 years of operation. With modern technology and state-of-the-art equipment from Shanghai Electric, the output of each of the four steam turbines has been increased from 25 MW to 27 MW, and the upgrade project is expected to extend their operational life by another 30 years.

Officially commissioned in 1974, the Ninh Binh Power Plant is one of the main producers of electricity in northern Vietnam, essential for maintaining local infrastructure, water management and economic growth. When fully operational, it is expected to generate approximately 800 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year for the region.

The Ninh Binh power plant was built with the support of China, Shanghai Electric supplied all electromechanical systems, boilers and auxiliary equipment, which, despite poor maintenance, operated at high load for nearly four decades. The power plant, the construction of which started in 1971, was designed as a unique partially submerged and partially floating structure, the key operational spaces of which were located 11 meters underground.

“Shanghai Electric works closely with Ninh Binh Power Plant and partners in Vietnam to provide users with superior service and technical solutions. It has also created a dedicated service team for easier communication,” said Ni Yuanpeng, Director of Service Department of Industrial Turbine Division of Shanghai Electric Power Generation Equipment Co., Ltd. Turbine Power Plant. “We have introduced a number of advanced technologies and transformational solutions, such as equipment life extension, modernization of control systems, environmental improvements and better co-firing capabilities in the boilers that played a key role in the comprehensive modernization of the Ninh Binh power plant .”

Before their recent modernization, the turbines had already significantly exceeded their planned lifetime. This led to significant wear and aging of their internal components, making it difficult to accurately assess the remaining life and performance of individual parts. The problem was compounded by a significant lack of technical documentation and operational data, which required Shanghai Electric to draw up detailed engineering plans and conduct a thorough on-site inspection before starting the project. The upgrade increased the power of all turbines so that their efficiency reached an optimal level, which resulted in maximizing performance and improving the stability of the local grid.

The restoration of the Ninh Binh Power Plant , an important part of the energy infrastructure of northern Vietnam, is of vital importance to the country’s energy security and eco-social development. The power plant has become a model project in the history of Vietnam’s energy industry and has been involved in the training of many experts who have then contributed to the construction of a number of power plants throughout Vietnam, among them the Vinh Tan and Quang Ninh power plants , two other major projects of Shanghai Electric in the country. In the future, the plant will seek to take advantage of transformation opportunities and will explore energy-saving renovations, further modernization and co-firing boilers in its future projects to increase its output.
