Singapore is ready to defend its sovereignty over Pulau Batu Puteh – MFA

SINGAPORE: Singapore is ready to defend its sovereignty over Batu Puteh (Pedra Branca) and will deal with any legal action that Malaysia may take, said a spokesperson for the Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

The spokesperson said this in a statement in response to media inquiries regarding Malaysia’s decision to pursue legal proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the sovereignty case of Batu Puteh, Batuan Tengah (Middle Rocks) and Tubir Selatan (South Ledge).

“Singapore cannot comment on Malaysia’s intention to pursue legal action at the ICJ as no details have been shared,” the spokesperson added.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Thursday (Oct 13) the council of ministers agreed on the matter after hearing the report of the presentation and recommendations of the Special Task Force on Law Revision of the Batu Puteh, Batuan Tengah and Tubir Selatan Sovereignty Case on Oct 7.

He said the special team also suggested that the government take appropriate action to defend the country’s sovereignty .

Ismail Sabri in a statement said the meeting was informed about the possibility of negligence and error on the part of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad when Malaysia missed the opportunity to file a review application against the ICJ judgment in 2008.
