TEHTRIS rolls out global network of nomadic honeypots (AMTD) to enhance cyber knowledge, trap cybercriminals

Paris, TEHTRIS, the French provider of the TEHTRIS XDR Platform in the fight against cyber espionage and cyber sabotage, announces the rollout of a new generation of honeypots – these traps which aim to attract any form of malicious activity on the web in order to identify and neutralize it.

These next-generation honeypots are « nomadic » lures that detect activities of malicious actors worldwide to better monitor the evolution of cyber threats and assist organizations in adapting their defense systems.

Deployed in the cloud, TEHTRIS’s new global network comprises over 1300 nomadic honeypots in 50 countries.

Evolution of honeypots

While honeypots have existed for many years and are regularly used by cybersecurity professionals and ethical hackers to track fraudulent activities on the web, their previously static format made them lose value over time.

Cybercriminal groups, particularly the most organized ones, have become accustomed to sharing information about honeypots, limiting their effectiveness once they are identified.

From being static, honeypots have now become nomadic. The IP addresses of the lures are disabled at a certain point in time and then reprogrammed to another location within the network, obscuring the tracks for cybercriminals.

By maximizing the lifespan and value of the monitoring device, this new generation of lures allows for capturing more information about the evolution of criminal activities and detecting cyberattack campaigns more rapidly to neutralize them in time.

AMTD: An emerging technology for enhancing cyber defense

The nomadic honeypot is one of the first applications of the emerging concept of Automated Moving Target Defense (AMTD), presented by Gartner as a technology that will profoundly improve cyber defense techniques. By 2025, 25% of cloud applications worldwide are expected to leverage AMTD functionalities.

AMTD technology represents a transition from a passive defense approach to a proactive one by rolling out new mechanisms of dynamic lures and automation capabilities to act more rapidly at the attack surface.

“Facing cybercriminals who are more organized and motivated than ever, it is crucial to act collectively to implement an adapted and effective defense. By deploying a new generation of honeypots, TEHTRIS provides the community with advanced cyber intelligence and confirms its position as a pioneer in cyber threat detection.” Laurent Oudot, co-founder and CTO of TEHTRIS and a honeypot specialist for over 20 years, explains.

Real-time mapping of the cyber threat landscape

Thanks to its global network of nomadic honeypots, TEHTRIS possesses unparalleled real-time knowledge about the global cyber threat landscape.

Similar to a weather forecast, TEHTRIS publishes a trend report on detected and analyzed cybercriminal activities through its network of nomadic lures. This forecast is shared in advance with leading cybersecurity institutions such as ANSSI and the Cyber Threat Alliance, and then published online for free on the TEHTRIS blog. An utter version of these analyses is available through the TEHTRIS XDR Platform.

TEHTRIS also offers organizations the option to add fictional resources to their own network with TEHTRIS Deceptive Response. This solution provides real-time warning and complementary insights to ensure infrastructure security through reports and event dashboards directly accessible on the TEHTRIS XDR Platform.
