KOTA KINABALU (Dec 12): Karpowership, a Turkish operator of floating power plants who is keen on collaboration opportunities in Sabah to fulfil the state’s power needs, hosted a high-level delegation from Malaysia in Istanbul, Turkey.
The delegates include Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industrial Development of Sabah, Datuk Thomas Logijin and representatives from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE), and Lumut Port.
The visit, hosted by Karpowership owner, Nuri DoganKaradeniz, offered an exclusive look into Karmarine Shipyard’s state-of-the-art facilities.
The delegates were impressed by the ongoing construction and conversion of various vessels, including Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) and Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers (LNGCs).
The highlight of the tour was the unveiling of two newly built Khan Class Powerships, the Orka Sultan and Orhan Bey.
These powerful vessels, each equipped with 415 MW of installed capacity, are ready for immediate deployment to meet global energy demands.
The Malaysian delegation expressed significant interest in Karpowership’s innovative power solutions, recognizing their potential to drive economic growth and create jobs.
Shahzul Jayawirawan Mohd Yunus, Director of MIDA Istanbul/Consul (Investment), Consulate General of Malaysia, acknowledged the potential of innovative energy solutions to support Malaysia’s economic growth and energy needs.
He encouraged stakeholders to explore the diverse investment opportunities in Malaysia, emphasizing the country’s strategic position and supportive policies under its National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and Green Investment Strategy (GIS).
MATRADE Director/Trade Commissioner Sadat Anak Foster Maad echoed this sentiment, emphasising his support for leveraging Karpowership’s expertise to benefit Malaysia.
He also highlighted Malaysia’s strategic location and urged companies such as Karpowership to collaborate with Malaysian companies through MATRADE to capitalise on the growing Southeast Asian export market for energy.
Karpowership’s Powerships, capable of generating between 36 MW and 470 MW of electricity, offer a flexible and efficient solution to meet diverse energy needs.
With their rapid deployment capabilities and ability to utilize various fuel sources, including LNG, diesel, and fuel oil, Powerships can seamlessly integrate into existing power grids.
By partnering with Karpowership, Malaysia can accelerate its energy transition, enhance energy security, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Karpowership is a global leader in providing reliable and flexible power solutions.
Its Asia commercial operations director, Tolga Bayav, told Bernama on the sidelines of the Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security (NatSec) Asia 2024 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur in May this year that Karpowership is keen on collaboration opportunities in Sabah to fulfil the state’s power needs.
He said the integration of the company’s floating power plant solutions, known as powerships, may assist in ensuring a stable and dependable power supply in the state, as well as Malaysia, which in turn would drive industrialisation while attracting foreign investments.
