UPSI Alumni, Anita Yusof Conquers Antarctica in Global Dream Ride 2 Mission

KUALA LUMPUR, March 14 – Malaysia’s solo female traveler, Anita Yusof, 57, who is also an alumnus of Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), has made personal history by successfully setting foot in Antarctica as part of her world tour mission, Global Dream Ride 2.

Anita, who embarked on her solo motorcycle expedition around the world, spent 17 days on the southernmost continent, from January 15 to January 31, 2025.

The youngest of three siblings, born in Batu Pahat, Johor, Anita said that reaching Antarctica was no easy feat. She had to endure extreme challenges while crossing Drake Passage, one of the most dangerous sea routes in the world.

In a social media post, Anita shared her experience navigating rough seas aboard a 50-meter sailing vessel en route to Antarctica.

“Unlike large cruise ships, which are more stable, traveling on a sailing vessel had a much greater impact, especially in turbulent waters.

“During the journey, our ship got caught in a cyclone. It was terrifying. The ship rocked violently without mercy.

“Even the securely fastened kitchen utensils were sent flying, and I suffered from severe seasickness, which led to emotional distress.”

According to Anita, the voyage took five and a half days, with 75% of the time spent in rough seas, making it one of the toughest challenges of her Global Dream Ride 2 mission.

She also shared that both her physical and mental endurance were pushed to the limit, but her determination to complete the mission was stronger than the hardships she faced.

“However, all the difficulties were worth it when I witnessed the extraordinary beauty of Antarctica, which I describe as the most stunning place I have ever set foot on.

“I have traveled around the world twice, but nothing compares to the beauty of Antarctica. It is truly magical, especially when the weather is clear. Absolutely breathtaking,” she said.

Emphasizing Environmental Conservation

Anita also emphasized the importance of preserving Antarctica’s ecosystem by respecting its wildlife, such as penguins, seabirds, and sea lions. She stated that tourists are prohibited from touching the animals or taking any objects, including rocks, as souvenirs.

Apart from the breathtaking landscapes, Anita also witnessed awe-inspiring natural phenomena, including giant icebergs that change color with the sunlight and the profound silence of an environment untouched by civilization.

“In Antarctica, there is no noise pollution, no permanent human settlements. It is truly a place that makes me feel so small in the face of nature’s grandeur,” she added.

Inspiring Women and Malaysians to Chase Their Dreams

According to Anita, this expedition was not just about fulfilling a personal dream, but also about proving that women can conquer the world with courage and determination.

She hopes her journey will inspire women and Malaysians to pursue their dreams fearlessly, even if they seem impossible.

Anita Yusof, previously recognized as a Global Ambassador for GIVI, is well known for her fearless solo travels across the world.

Global Dream Ride 2 is a continuation of her epic journey, aiming not only to explore new territories but also to share experiences and inspiration with Malaysians.

Additionally, she plans to write a book about her experiences in Antarctica and organize sharing sessions to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and wonders of the White Continent.

“This journey has changed my perspective on life and nature. I want to share this experience with the public so that they can appreciate the world we live in even more,” she said.

UPSI Vice-Chancellor Expresses Pride

Meanwhile, UPSI Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr. Md Amin Md Taff, expressed his pride in Anita Yusof’s achievements as an alumnus who has made a name for herself in the world of solo travel.

“Anita Yusof’s success is not only a source of pride for UPSI as an academic institution that produces outstanding individuals, but it also serves as an inspiration to students and graduates of this university. “Her courage and perseverance demonstrate that knowledge and experience can be used to achieve great dreams, even in challenging fields like solo travel to the world’s most extreme continent.”

He added that UPSI consistently supports its alumni who elevate the university’s reputation internationally and hopes that Anita’s success will motivate more graduates to explore unconventional opportunities.

“Her achievement aligns with the university’s spirit of producing individuals who are bold, competitive, and capable of contributing to society and the world. “We hope her success will open the eyes of more young Malaysians to pursue their dreams courageously,” he concluded.
