US$5,000 reward for missing Malaysian Everest climber
Pioneer Adventur puts up money in hope of finding deaf man.
A REWARD of US$5,000 (RM23,690) has been offered for the location of Muhammad Hawari Hashim, who went missing on Mount Everest in May last year. Malaysia Mountain Guide Association (PMGP) president Mohd Yussainy Md Yusop said the reward was offered by Pioneer Adventure.
He said the leader of the Everest 2023 Mission, Azim Afif, was currently on Everest to coordinate field operations.
“The Expedition Operator Association has been informed of a reward amounting to US$5,000 if a sherpa or any individual on Everest who can provide information on the location of Hawari directly to the executive director of Pioneer Adventure Pvt Ltd, Nivesh Karki,” read the statement.
The 33-year-old Hawari, who is hearing-impaired, went missing on May 19, 2023, while descending from Camp 4 after reaching the summit of Mount Everest. The search and rescue mission stopped last year when the special permit for drones and aerial search approved by the Nepali authorities expired.
The authorities said the search would continue this year.
Yussainy said the PMGP search for Hawari had the technical assistance of the Malaysian Space Agency and the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department.
“PMGP received cooperation from the Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal, which told the foreign minister of Nepal to inform the country’s military to be on the look out (for Hawari) during the mountain cleaning campaign on Everest.”
