Visit Maldives Club Unveils Exciting Burunu Boma Fishing Tournament

The Visit Maldives Club (VMC) unveiled the Maldives’ largest sports fishing tournament, Burunu Boma, during a ceremony at the Malé Table Tennis Hall on December 20, 2024. The event was graced by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, highlighting the nation’s dedication to promoting sports tourism and sustainable fishing practices.

Scheduled for April to May 2025, the Burunu Boma tournament is set to welcome international fishing enthusiasts alongside participants from the Maldives’ tourism sector. The launch also featured the debut of the tournament’s dedicated microsite and a digital winner’s shield, emphasizing its modern and eco-friendly approach.

Minister Ahmed Shiyam celebrated the sports fishing community’s pivotal role in the Maldives, describing Burunu Boma as the nation’s largest event of its kind. He announced Crossroads Marina as the inaugural venue, marking a milestone for the location and underscoring the event’s potential to boost tourism and attract global sports fishing enthusiasts.

“This is just the start,” declared MMPRC CEO and MD Ibrahim Shiuree, outlining a strategy to diversify Maldivian tourism. “With several events leading up to it, Burunu Boma will become a flagship international sports fishing festival. We aim to secure a prominent place on the international tourism calendar, making the Maldives a direct destination for sports fishing enthusiasts,” MMPRC CEO and MD Ibrahim Shiuree explained.

Ahmed Saaif, President of Visit Maldives Club, emphasized the long-term vision for the tournament, stating, “This tournament is planned in such a way that it will be held each year, establishing it as a key event in the Maldives tourism industry.”

Central to the tournament is the “catch and release” method, a practice that underscores the Maldives’ commitment to marine conservation. This aligns seamlessly with the country’s long-standing focus on sustainable tourism, reinforcing its reputation as an environmentally conscious destination.

Through initiatives like Burunu Boma, the Visit Maldives Club aims to solidify the Maldives’ status as a premier global destination, leveraging its natural beauty and sustainable practices to attract a diverse audience of adventure-seeking travelers.
