
World renown tabla master Zakir Hussain has died.
KUALA LUMPUR: Famous Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, who won four Grammy Awards, has passed away at the age of 73 in San Francisco, USA, due to health issues related to a lung disease.
He passed away at 4 PM local time on Monday at a private hospital in the country.
Zakir went to the hospital two weeks ago for lung problems. His condition got worse, so he was moved to the intensive care unit (ICU).
His family said this in a statement to Indian news.
His sister Khurshid Aulia said Zakir left them in a calm way.
“He died peacefully after they turned off the ventilator at about 4 PM San Francisco time,” he said.
Zakir Hussain was born on March 9, 1951, and he is the son of the famous Indian tabla player, Alla Rakha.
Zakir is survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola, and his two daughters, Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi.
In a family statement, they said that Zakir has passed down an amazing legacy to the world, and that legacy will be remembered for many years.
During his sixty-year career, Zakir worked with many famous artists from his country and other countries.
One of the shows that started a big trend happened in 1973. It featured English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L Shankar, and percussionist T. H “Vikku” They mixed Indian classical music with jazz, creating a new type of music that people had never heard before.
He began making art when he was seven years old and worked with famous Indian musicians like Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Shivkumar Sharma.
He worked with Western musicians like Yo-Yo Ma, Charles Lloyd, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Mickey Hart, and George Harrison. These collaborations helped share Indian classical music with the world and made him an important cultural representative.
Zakir has won four Grammy Awards in his career, including three at this year’s 66th Grammy Awards.
He is one of India’s well-respected classical musicians and has won many national awards. These include the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
