Government to Expand Supply of Budget Egg Grades Following Subsidy Withdrawal – Mohamad Sabu

KUALA TERENGGANU, May 4, 2025 – The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) will increase the supply of special-grade, lower-priced eggs in response to the government’s decision to end egg subsidies effective August 1, 2025.

Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said the move aims to provide more affordable options for consumers while helping stabilize prices.

“We plan to scale up production of special-grade eggs like the ones sold during Ramadan at RM5 per tray. While we’re unsure of the exact price this time, we’re confident it won’t skyrocket,” he told reporters after a festive event in Terengganu.

The decision was announced on April 30, with several intervention measures planned in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to reduce the impact on consumers.

Among these, the government secured industry support to offer affordable egg options and distribute them through national initiatives such as Agro MADANI Sales and Rahmah Sales.

Mohamad also clarified that the policy was not implemented abruptly. “We consulted egg producers and industry players in advance. This soft landing approach ensures price control while phasing out subsidies,” he explained.

Separately, the Minister urged farmers to increase the cultivation of fragrant coconut varieties such as pandan coconuts, citing high demand from China.

“This presents a great economic opportunity, especially for states like Terengganu with vast land potential. With over 1.4 billion people—and 800 million of them being active consumers—China is a market we must tap into,” he added.

The export of young coconuts for fresh consumption is supported by a new Phytosanitary Protocol agreed with China, which boosts biosecurity and traceability standards. According to Agriculture Director-General Datuk Nor Sam Alwi, the initiative prioritizes high-quality, aromatic coconut varieties for export.
