Multi-Purpose Ponds Crucial as Malaysia Battles Climate Extremes – Fadillah

LONDON, April 27, 2025 – Facing more frequent and intense climate events, Malaysia is deploying multi-purpose retention ponds to tackle rising flood risks, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said.

Addressing the Malaysian community in London, Fadillah emphasized that the ponds would not only capture excessive rainwater during storms but also provide vital water reserves for periods of drought.

“With storms and heavy rains becoming more extreme, it is crucial we strengthen our defenses and minimize economic losses caused by flooding,” he said.

He further reaffirmed Malaysia’s long-term ambition to transition to 70% renewable energy by 2050 to support climate resilience.
