Bladex and Panama Canal Turn Recycled Plastic into Infrastructure for Community Benefit
PANAMA CITY, May 6, 2025 – In a powerful demonstration of environmental responsibility and social commitment, Bladex, the Panama Canal Authority, and the Botellas de Amor Foundation have completed the construction of an 81-meter pedestrian bridge made from over three tons of recycled plastic in the Panama Canal Watershed.
The bridge, which connects four communities and enhances the mobility of more than 300 residents, reflects how purposeful collaboration can deliver both sustainable infrastructure and social impact. By repurposing plastic waste, the initiative prevents environmental harm while directly benefiting the lives of local people.
“This project proves that sustainable practices can be translated into tangible improvements in people’s lives,” said Jessica Janson, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications and Social Investment at Bladex.
This is Bladex’s second recycled-materials bridge, following one completed in Kosovo, Puerto Caimito in 2023. The initiative aligns with the bank’s ESG strategy, which prioritizes environmental innovation and inclusive development throughout Latin America.
“We believe in building bridges—between regions, between communities, and toward a sustainable future,” added Jorge Salas, CEO of Bladex.
The bridge was built using materials produced by the Botellas de Amor Foundation, with logistics and field support provided by the Panama Canal Authority. The initiative also included plastic collection campaigns, environmental education efforts, and volunteer events.
“Participating in this project reinforces our commitment to both environmental conservation and the well-being of the communities within the Panama Canal Watershed,” said Ilya Espino de Marotta, Deputy Administrator of the Panama Canal.
As a key water source and biodiversity zone supporting global maritime operations, the Panama Canal Watershed is essential not only to Panama but to the international shipping industry. This initiative showcases how public-private partnerships can protect this critical region while delivering real benefits on the ground.
Bladex has reaffirmed its intention to replicate and expand such initiatives across Latin America, ensuring that sustainable development is not just a goal—but a deliverable.
