Doing more than just data backups

Doing more than just data backups

KUALA LUMPUR – Rubrik research has found that the majority (93 percent) of businesses have encountered significant issues with their backup and recovery solutions.

In its “State of data security by Rubrik Zero Labs: The hard truths of data security” report, based on a poll of more than 1,600 IT and security leaders (including CISOs and CIOs), the company found just 16% of global organizations that paid a ransom and received a decryptor actually managed to recover all of their data.

Legacy backup and recovery solutions proved to be continuous barriers towards effective data security, with nine in ten companies revealing they had experienced backup breaches during a cyber attack — 73 percent were reported as partially successful.

Meanwhile, nearly three-quarters (72 percent) of organisations surveyed reported paying a ransomware demand, and just 16 percent recovered all data via attacker decryption tools.

Data security is becoming increasingly complex, due to a combination of evolving threat tactics and dataset growth, made evident by organisations securing 25 percent more data on average last year (on-premises grew 19 percent; cloud grew 61 percent; and SaaS data secured grew 236 percent).

Rubrik is a data security company based in Palo Alto, with the main task to help customers from data loss. Data loss could be a hardware failure, admin error, or cyber-attacks, particularly ransomware attacks.

The company was founded in January 2014 by Bipul Sinha, Arvind Jain, Soham Mazumdar, and Arvind Nithrakashyap.

The company calls itself a “Zero Trust Data Security.” It provides data management services such as backup and recovery, targeting enterprises that run hybrid cloud environments. Its software can be run on-premises and in the cloud to protect and manage data.

They have been in Asia since 2016, with a presence all over Asia Pacific with headquarters at Palo Alto.

Yeong Chee Wai, Area Vice President, Sales Engineering of Rubrik, speaking to Asia News Today at the Cybersecurity Asia Conference 2023, said, “There are many cyber attacks with some research says it happens at the eleventh second.”

“What is worrying a lot of these cyber-attacks is ransomware.

“They (attackers) are not only able to gain remote access to the victim’s network, but they are also able to encrypt and hijack the system.”

He added that cyber attackers are becoming more sophisticated by even being able to search and destroy the backups.

“At times the attackers can also steal data and threaten to expose sensitive data on the public domain. It has serious consequences as customers’ information are exposed, and liable for regulatory repercussions.

“So how Rubrik comes into action is when we take backups of customers, we do something different where we store the data in ‘zero trust architecture’ as it is Immutable by Design which prevents unauthorized read, change, encryption or deletion of data.

“Also, we need to ensure the backup copy is ‘free’ of any malicious code or software.”

Yeong pointed out that sometimes the copies of the backup may also contain contaminated files which could further harm the situation and restoring it can take time this is where some companies may succumb to paying the ransom.

“So, to overcome this at an early stage, we run analytics on the backup copies and anomaly detection.

“We study the changes and patterns day by day. And we have an engine that can detect the anomalies that have changed and eventually helps to advise our clients.”
