HAWANA 2023: ‘JOM KE IPOH’ Treasure Hunt gets overwhelming response

KUALA LUMPUR — The treasure hunt for media personnel from Kuala Lumpur to Ipoh, Perak, held in conjunction with the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2023 has garnered encouraging response.

Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Strategic Planning head Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin who is also HAWANA Secretariat chief said about 120 media practitioners and seasoned journalists are participating in the ‘Jom ke Ipoh’ treasure hunt.

“Since the COVID-19 pandemic, exciting activities have not been held for a long time, thus the goal of this treasure hunt is to strengthen friendships and forge closer ties between young journalists, seniors, and veterans.

“At one point, treasure hunting was an event that drew the interest of media personnel. We took the opportunity to organise this event in conjunction with HAWANA (this year),” she told Bernama here today.

She said Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching is scheduled to flag off the treasure hunt at Wisma Bernama, this Saturday. Meanwhile, Bernama Special Project Editor M. Govind Nair who is also Treasure Hunt Clerk-of-Course said through the event, participants would be taken to many attractive locations in Perak.

“This treasure hunt will take participants to several historical and heritage sites in Perak. “They will be going through routes that are seldom taken when they travel back to their kampung on normal visits.

“So it will be a very interesting adventure for them,” he said.

The Hawana 2023 celebration will be held in Ipoh, Perak from May 27-29 with the theme ‘Free Media, Pillar of Democracy’ to re-emphasise the issue of media freedom for journalists in carrying out their duties.

The Hawana 2023 Summit will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on May 28. The annual date of May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists’ Day in conjunction with the publication of the first newspaper in Malaysia, Utusan Melayu, on May 29, 1939.
