ULAN BATOR, Apr 3 (NNN-APA) – Over 30 percent of the Mongolian territory is still covered with snow of up to 40 cm thick, the National Emergency Management Agency, said today.

Last winter, Mongolia saw record snowfall, the largest since 1975, and around 90 percent of its territory had been covered with snow up to 100 cm thick, according to the emergency agency. Due to the heavy snowfall, almost all provinces of the country had experienced the extreme wintry weather known as “dzud,” killing over 5.9 million farm animals, so far, this winter.

The dzud is a Mongolian term to describe a severely cold winter, when a large number of livestock die because the ground is frozen or covered in snow.

Mongolia, one of the last nomadic countries in the world, has a harsh continental climate with frequent strong winds, snow and dust storms.
